The five-step migration plan

• Inventory current files and pick the source of truth for each data type.
• Clean data: standardise item and customer names, remove duplicates.
• Choose the first module (often inventory or sales) tied to accounting.
• Run in parallel for two to four weeks and compare results.
• Train each role, then officially retire the old files.

The biggest mistake: migrating the mess as-is

If you migrate 3,000 items with duplicates and typos, the new system inherits the same problem. Budget time to clean data before migrating — it’s often the most important step in the whole project.
